Know what is left to spend before payday

PayDay's Insights tab takes the money in your day-to-day accounts, less the bills likely before your next pay, and shows what is left to spend. It is worked out from your own transactions, not an average from somewhere else.

The questions it answers

Can I afford this?

The most useful question about your money is also the one most of us cannot answer on the spot.

Payday feels far away

Between paydays it is easy to lose track of whether you are on pace or about to run tight.

Savings look like spending money

A balance that includes your savings makes you feel richer than the money you actually mean to spend.

Bills land at the worst time

A direct debit a few days before payday can take more than you expected was left.

What the Insights tab shows

Each estimate says so, and shows how it was worked out. When some of your transactions could not be read, the tab says which accounts.

Left to spend

The money in your day-to-day accounts, less the bills likely before your next pay. An estimate, with how it was worked out one tap away.

Bills before your next pay

Regular bills, weekly to monthly, picked out of your own transactions, and the ones likely to come out before you are paid again.

Where your money goes

Your spending by category and by merchant, with the merchant names, categories and logos Akahu adds to your transactions.

Your pays and splits

How each pay was split, and how your splits are tracking against their targets, from PayDay's own record of the payments it made.

Common questions

Where do I find Left to spend?

On the Overview of the Insights tab in the PayDay app. PayDay is in private testing, so join the waitlist and we will email you an invite when a spot opens up.

How is Left to spend worked out?

PayDay adds up the balances of your day-to-day accounts, takes off the regular bills likely to come out of them before your next pay, and takes off any splits PayDay has sent that your bank is not showing yet. Your next pay date is estimated from when your pay has landed before, or from the pay frequency you set. If PayDay has not seen a regular pay yet, or your pay is late, it covers the next 14 days instead.

Which accounts count as day-to-day?

PayDay makes a guess for each account, such as treating a savings account as set aside, and you can change it with one tap. Only day-to-day accounts count towards Left to spend, so your savings are not treated as spending money.

Does it count what I owe on my credit card?

No. Cards and loans are shown as owing and are never taken off. A card balance is not all due before your next pay, and taking it off would make the number look worse than your cash position really is.

Does PayDay store these figures?

No. When you open the Insights tab, PayDay reads your transactions from the last 90 days through Akahu and works the figures out in the app. It does not store them, and they are not sent to Payy. It does remember your choices on the tab, such as which accounts to include, on your PayDay account. Our privacy policy has the details.

Is Left to spend financial advice?

No. It is an estimate based on your balances and the bills you have paid before, and your bills will not always follow the same pattern. For advice about your situation, talk to a licensed financial adviser.
