Account deletion

Delete your PayDay account

PayDay is an app made by PayDay Limited, a New Zealand company. You can delete your PayDay account and its data at any time, in the app or by email. This page explains how, and what is kept afterwards.

Delete it in the app

The same steps work in the iPhone, Android and web app.

  1. Open PayDay

Sign in on your phone, or at app.payday.nz on the web.

  2. Go to Profile

Tap Profile in the menu at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Tap Delete Account

Scroll to the bottom of Profile. Delete Account is under Sign out.

  4. Confirm

Read the message, then tap Delete account.

  5. Confirm it is you

Enter your password, or sign in with Google again, and then a code from your authenticator app. If you have not set up an authenticator app yet, PayDay helps you set one up first.

When it is done, PayDay shows Account deleted and signs you out. Want a copy of your data first? Use Export My Data in Profile before you delete.

Ask us to delete it by email

If you cannot use the app, email hello@payday.nz from the email address you sign in to PayDay with, and ask us to delete your account.

We act only on a request from the account's own email address. Before we delete anything we reply to that address, and we go ahead once you confirm. We then delete your account and its data as set out below within 30 days, and email you when it is done.

Your bank is disconnected too

Deleting your account ends PayDay's access to your bank, and automatic splits stop. Before anything is deleted, PayDay asks Akahu, the open banking service it connects through, to revoke its access. If PayDay still has access and Akahu does not confirm it has ended, nothing is deleted and PayDay asks you to try again. You can check at my.akahu.nz that PayDay is no longer listed.

If a payment is still going through your bank, PayDay does not delete your account until it has settled, so the record of that money is not lost. This usually takes a day or two; try again then. If you pay for a PayDay plan by card, deleting your account cancels it and you are not charged again.

What is deleted

When the deletion finishes, PayDay deletes your account and everything linked to it:

  • Your account and sign-in: your name, email address, password and authenticator app set-up
  • Your profile photo
  • Your connected bank accounts and what PayDay stored about them, such as account names and numbers, account holder names, balances and payment consent details
  • Your pay sources, split rules and automation settings
  • Your split and transfer history

What is kept, and for how long

A few records outlive the account, for security, tax and the way backups work:

Security logs

Sign-in, bank connection and payment events, with the IP address and device they came from. They are no longer linked to you, and are deleted 90 days after they were recorded.

Billing records, if you paid for a plan

Your invoices, plan and subscription history, payment references and payment records. We keep them for as long as New Zealand tax law requires us to keep business records, currently 7 years, and use them only for tax, accounting and resolving payment disputes.

Backups

Deleted data can remain in our database provider's encrypted backups until those backups expire.

Copies already sent to providers

Error reports, emails and team alerts already sent to Sentry, Resend and Slack, and messages already sent to Anthropic for Payy to answer, are kept under those providers' own retention periods.

Connection notices from Akahu

Records of the notices Akahu sends PayDay about bank connections are deleted after 7 days.

Questions? Email hello@payday.nz. Our privacy policy explains what PayDay collects and what happens when you only disconnect your bank.
